Hiking Wli Falls and Mt Afadjato, Volta Region, Ghana, West Africa

This is a very late post.
Richard, I and Broghen decided to go and hike the tallest mountain in Ghana last year. It was long weekend that time, so we decided to spend 3 days in Volta, It's almost a 6 hours drive from Accra going to Volta Region.

We left Accra around 8am and arrive around 1pm.

Our Chalet

LOL
We stayed at Big Foot Safari Lodge, the lodge is close to all the hiking spot! This is convenient place stay if you are planning to hike Wli Falls and Mt.Afadjato. After we have checked in we just decided to chill and rest for a bit and then start our hike.

We decided to hike Mt.Afadjato first as they say its easier. Mt.Afadjato is the highest mountain in Ghana 885 meters or 2,904ft above sea level, its located in the Agumatsa Range near the Village of Liati Wote and Gbledi in Volta Region at the Border with Togo, so few more km and we are to be in Togo! lol

Soon the walk began. you will be welcome with the signage as you start! we did not think it was easy at all, we had to weave through a lot woody plant species. You're either placing your foot on a loose rock or trying to hold on to the hanging branch or a tree its actually the same thing with hiking Wli Falls, but of course slowly but surely we are able to reached the top after 3hrs hike, well for other maybe 2 hrs only. we went on a slow pace so took us 3 hrs. It was fulfilling! What a stunning view!

The next day we hiked Wli Falls, its is the tallest waterfalls in Ghana, it is consist of the lower falls and the higher falls. Its a long hike through the jungle before you can reach each falls.

The path leading to the waterfalls though the forest starts from the registration area (yeah you need to pay). We decided to packed food and have lunch at the higher falls and get a guide to hike with us as well!

1st Bridge
So the hike began! the path is really narrow the way up that could only allow one person, the path is shaded by tall trees of the forest that's making it impossible for the sun rays to reach the you (I was happy about this though). Before you can actually reach the lower falls you have to cross nine wooden bridge first.

Whats good about this forest is that some trees are labeled with their scientific name as well as their local or common names. Cool huh!? This was probably done by the wildlife authorities.

The only Colorful thing I saw in the forest besides butterfly!

The forest also abounds in animal and bird species such as snakes, butterflies, bats and other insects that are seen on the way as one strolls through the forest on the way to the fall site. Hiking Wli Falls took us 6hrs fr both low and higher falls. Occasionally, We'd take a seat on a rock and referee the inner battle going on between my heart and my mind. Whilst my mind was excited about how far I had come up the mountain, my heart was pounding faster as I chase my breath! Tired, sweaty, wobbling legs, with a bottle of water in hand! but again its all worth it once you reach your destination! After the long hike you can enjoy the cold breeze and water for a post hike swim, it really pays off!
